Termites and the damage they cause
Termites, undisputedly, are the most destructive of structural pests. The
National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause $1.5
billion damage to structures annually and that an additional $1.0 billion is
spent on treatment.
These
industrious insects work 24 hours per day, gradually eating wood and any
other cellulose containing materials in their environment, e.g., structures.
Since they remain hidden within the wood on which they are feeding, in mud
tubes, and/or in the soil, in structures they typically wreak havoc
undetected.
People
often confuse termites with flying ants because of their somewhat similar
appearance. The confusion is especially true of the winged forms of both
insects which often swarm at the same time of the year.
Eastern subterranean termites are found from Ontario southward from the
eastern United States seaboard as far west as Arizona and Utah. Western
subterranean termites are found along the Pacific Coast to western Mexico
and east into Idaho and Nevada.
Colonies are usually located in the soil from which workers build mud tubes
to structural wood where they can feed. Typically, colonies are connected to
the soil and/or close to a moisture source.
Termite facts;
60,000
Eastern Subterranean termites can consume 3 linear feet of pine studs per
year.
Colonies of Eastern Subterranean termites contain 200,000 to 5,000,000
workers.
Native
Subterranean termites can cover 14,000 square feet.
Native
Subterranean termites can travel approximately 250 feet.
